CERVICAL AND OTHER DYSTONIAS

Cervical Dystonia (Spasmodic Torticollis) is produced by involuntary contractions (spasms) of the head, neck, and shoulders.  This results in pain, spasm, and the head twisting into aberrant positions.  The disease process can be hereditary and is most common in females.  Cervical Dystonia patients usually has difficulty with reading, driving, and watching television.  Typically, this results in withdrawal from social interactions.

The treatment of choice for primary dystonias is Botulinum Toxin A or B. This involves small injections at the head, neck, and shoulders to relieve the pain, spasms, and bring the head back to the midline.  The procedure is usually performed at our office procedure room and the patient can be discharged approximately 10-15 minutes following.  On occasion, where pain tolerance is low, we perform the procedure at a surgical center under sedation.  Along with this treatment, physical therapy and oral medications such as muscle relaxants are helpful.

Other primary dystonias involve the trunk (abdomen & chest and the upper and lower extremities.  Our office has extensive experience in the treatment of these conditions. For further evaluation, call 818-360-4949.
