Platelet Rich Plasma
Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP) is a cutting-edge technique that uses your own platelets to facilitate the healing process and helps with chronic pain in joints. Blood platelets are responsible for blood clotting after injury. What many people are not aware of is that blood platelets also serve two other important functions. They are responsible for bringing white blood cells to the injured area to clean up the remains of dead and injured cells, and release of Growth Factors that are directly responsible for tissue regeneration. These substances are called cytokins and include platelet derived growth factor, epithelial growth factor, and other bioactive proteins. This procedure has become popular among orthopedic and pain specialists. Athletes use PRP to speed recovery from injuries.
HOW IS PRP PREPARED:
The patient’s own blood is drawn and placed in a device (Harvest Centrifuge) that separates the platelets and plasma from the blood cells. A small portion of the plasma remains mixed with the platelets. This Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP) is then injected using a syringe and needle.
